The Research Center for Environmental Medicine was established in 2008 at Kaohsiung Medical University and was renamed as the Research Center for Precision Environmental Medicine in 2022. The mission of the center is to investigate the relationships between emerging environmental issues worldwide and disease.
To achieve this mission, the center actively integrates the clinical resources of the Kaohsiung Medical University healthcare system and adopts a patient-centered research framework to systematically examine the effects of environmental pollution on the onset and progression of human diseases. The center brings together interdisciplinary research teams specializing in environmental exposure assessment, human biomonitoring, molecular biology, and clinical medicine. By adopting multi-omics research strategies, the center seeks to elucidate disease-related etiological factors and underlying biological mechanisms, and to further develop evidence-based mitigation and intervention strategies.
In addition, the center is committed to cultivating high-level professionals with strong scientific research capabilities and an innovation-oriented mindset. Through the University Social Responsibility (USR) Project, the center develops educational materials and outreach models that translate research findings into real-world applications within communities and practical settings, thereby expanding the societal impact of academic research.
The Center’s overall development strategy is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with particular emphasis on SDG3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG4 (Quality Education), SDG9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG10 (Reducing Inequalities), SDG11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
